Firm Wins Preliminary Injunction Against ICE

On the basis of a striking record and extensive briefing compiled by the Firm and our co-counsel the ACLU, NYCLU and Make the Road New York, Judge Lewis A. Kaplan issued a preliminary injunction ordering the continuation of the government’s obligation immediately to remedy the inhumane and unconstitutional conditions of confinement and denial of access to counsel for individuals detained at 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan, and provisionally certified the class of individuals who have or will be detained at 26 Federal Plaza for more than 12 hours.  Building on the temporary restraining order previously issued by Judge Kaplan, the government is required to provide confidential attorney access to detained individuals, severely limit the permitted population of the rooms at the facility, provide basic necessities such as sleeping mats and hygiene products, and to otherwise remedy unsanitary conditions at 26 Fed, among other directives.

Miller et al. v. City of New York et al.

The firm obtained a $53 million settlement on behalf of a class of pre-trial detainees and parolees who claim that the New York City Department of Correction purposefully evaded limitations on the use of solitary confinement by placing inmates in unlawful stealth restrictive housing facilities. The settlement received extensive coverage in the New York Times, New York Post, and New York Law Journal.  Our co-counsel, Alex Reinert of Cardozo Law School, discussed the settlement on Inside City Hall.

In re Jeffrey Epstein Abuse

With Gloria Allred, we have represented dozens of individuals who were victimized by Jeffrey Epstein. We stood with them as they bravely told their stories in public, as described in CBS News, NBC News, and The Guardian. We successfully obtained compensation for their harms in court and through the Epstein Victims Compensation Program.

Recently, we spoke out to discuss how shameful it is that Prince Andrew continues to reap the privileges of his position, even after associating with Epstein for years. Mariann Wang spoke about this to The Guardian and The Daily Mail.

Biased NYPD Sexual Assault Investigations

On behalf of two sexual assault survivors, the firm filed suit against New York City alleging sex discrimination in the inadequate provision of police and investigative services to victims of rape and sexual assault. Read news coverage highlighting our lawsuit. On June 30, 2022, the U.S. Department of Justice launched a systemic investigation into the NYPD’s gender-biased policing practices.

The Appeal

Zervos v. Trump

We represented Summer Zervos in her defamation lawsuit against Donald J. Trump for nearly three years, from its initial filing just before he took office, defeating multiple efforts in three different courts by Trump to have the case dismissed or stayed. Ms. Zervos bravely came forward as one of several women who reported being forcibly groped by Trump, who then falsely branded her as a liar.
